Q. What are Sitz baths?

A. Sitz baths can be purchased from hospitals and are often available in the form of a small plastic basin that sits atop the toilet and is filled with warm water. The principle of the sitz bath is based on hydrotherapy, whereby the warmth of the water promotes circulation in the pelvic area, thereby speeding up the healing process. A woman is recommended to sit in the basin for up to fifteen minutes or until bath water becomes cool. Sitz baths are recommended immediately following delivery to soothe perineal tears and soreness.

Q. What are Sitz baths used for?

A. Besides soothing perineum tears and soreness after delivery, sitz baths are beneficial in eliminating hemorrhoids and for soothing symptoms associated with bladder or yeast infections.

Q. How often can sitz baths be taken?

A. Sitz baths can be taken as a weekly tonic treatment or used more frequently as part of a more rigorous health program.

Q. Can stretch marks be prevented?

A. Stretch marks can be hereditary; however, women in their second trimester often get symptoms of “itchy belly” (very dry skin), due to the stretching of the growing belly. It will begin to crack, which can be a precursor to stretch marks. The best way to avoid stretch marks, is by taking preventative steps. One of these steps is to ensure that the skin remains elastic through intense moisturizing. The best time to start moisturizing the skin is at the very beginning of pregnancy. Daily applications are highly encouraged. Along with this preventative measure, it is also recommended to drink lots of water and other liquids to encourage the skin’s elasticity to increase its pliability.
